Twists and Turns - Episode 10

Episode 10

Bukky had started to worry about Iye. It was evening already and they had not heard anything from her; even Tamuno had gotten over her tears and was now worried too. They had tried calling earlier but she had not answered the phone. They did not have David's number and even if they did, they would not have called him. They had heard enough from her to know better.
"May be you should try again." Tamuno suggested. So, Bukky dialed the number and put it on speaker. "Maybe they are holding a party for her; you know how noisy parties could be? I know Iye would not ignore our calls on purpose." Bukky said trying to be optimistic.
She was about to disconnect the call after the third trial when they heard her tired voice.
"Iye are you okay!?" They chorused "I think I am for now, my baby is lying in the hospital with tubes all over her. If anything happens to her, hmm! If anything happens to that girl, maybe you guys will come and visit me too in the mortua...” “God forbid...." They echoed
"Iye, stop talking that way. You will not die in Jesus name. Which hospital are you in now? We’ll come and meet you there and...” “Don't worry okay” Iye interrupted. “I will be home soon. The doctor said I should go and get her some food." She sniffed as she thanked them and hung up.

Iye had begged Mark to go home but he said he wouldn't leave her with David.
She was tired of their testosterone-inspired display. She didn't have energy to argue because David was drunk as usual. She wondered what she had liked about him in secondary school because he was a jerk back then but she was too blinded by his swag to realize it and now, it was too late. She remembered the shame of bearing this child and the humiliation she faced from family and friends. Her father had sent her back to finish her secondary school education in the same school so she was about two years behind her mates as a reward for her stupid mistake. She could not imagine going through the pain of losing a child that she had sacrificed so much for. Never! She wouldn't be able to bear it. The fact that David was her baby’s father brought more complexities. It had been one problem or the other. Iye was now in her final year already after so much struggles and this child wants to die on her when things are just about to start getting better? No way!
Her jaw was resting on her palm as she looked straight in front of her. Iye was lost in thought and had not heard the panic going on around her until Mark tapped her. She jumped up in confusion, her heart gripped with fear as she noticed the nurses running about. She wanted to run into the ward but they stopped her by the door. David was snoring deeply and several attempts were made to wake him up but the fool was too drunk and deep asleep. Mark held her firm now because she had made several attempts to enter the ward.
"Mark chill now, I’m serious now I will just sit down quietly and wait okay?" She said pulling his hands away but he just nodded and held onto her even tighter.
Her body was shaking and as she saw one of the nurses walk out slowly, she knew the worst has happened. Iye wriggled with the whole strength she could muster and broke free from David’s grip. She pushed all the nurses away as she got to her daughter's bed. They had covered her face with a white cover cloth. Her leg froze as she stood beside her bed like someone in a trance. She pulled back the cloth to take a look at her daughter who looked peaceful as if she was just sleeping but then this was no ordinary sleep…

"Madam, I am sorry. We lost her." The doctor said. Iye turned and looked at Mark, she believed she was just having a bad dream because her daughter was not dead at least not on her birthday.
"Doctor, you said what?" She said moving towards the doctor like a robot.
"Madam, calm down please. Your daughter was a strong girl but they brought her here when it was too late and....” “NOOOOO!!!!!" Iye screamed out just before she fainted. She staggered backwards and Mark caught her before she hit the ground.
"Somebody get me some water." The doctor ordered as they tried to revive her.
She blinked slowly and looked around in confusion.
"Please let me go and see my baby. I want my baby." She cried.
Mark went out and saw David still sleeping. He wished for the split second that it was David who died, not that sweet little girl but here he was snoring like an idiot when his daughter just passed on. He would not allow him sleep on when he should be mourning the daughter he killed due to his laxity.
Mark tapped him gently at first but when he did not wake up, just then, he saw the bowl of water that they used in reviving Iye.
"Someone else needs to be revived." He muttered to himself as he splashed the chilled water on his face. The sleeping fool jerked up and was about to start ranting when Mark hit him with reality.
"David, your daughter is dead. I hope that makes you really happy?"
"What!"
He asked in confusion. "You heard me the first time."
